Women in the Ontario election

This is from DemocraticSpace
Although the NDP has the most women candidates many are in unwinnable ridings. This may also be true of quite a few Liberal woman candidates. The Greens with only 20 percent women candidates obviously will not be concerned since it is a gender issue not an eco issue! If no women choose to run for the Libertarians that is their free choice!

DemocraticSPACE would like to congratulate the Ontario NDP for nominating 40% women candidates in the upcoming election, more than any other party (and exceeding federal Liberal leader Stephane Dion’s modest pledge to nominate 33% women). 40% is an accomplishment and a threshold that all parties that wish to represent Canadians should strive for (with the goal of eventually reaching parity). The Ontario Liberal Party should also be given a pat on the back, nominating 36% women. The Ontario NDP and Liberals are well above the rest of the pack. The Family Coalition Party is third with 24% women (through today), followed by the PCs with just 22% women, and the Greens (through today) with only 20%. The Libertarians should be ashamed that they are presenting a slate of candidates without a single woman. Overall, just 26.8% of candidates are women (through today), a number in which Ontarians should be disappointed.

While the number of women candidates is important, what ultimately matters is how many women representatives we elect. And on this score, we are in for a disappointment. Why? Because many women candidates are in ridings that their party cannot win. Using our latest projections, we estimate that the maximum number of women MPPs in the next legislature is 34 or 31.8%. Currently, 24 or just 22.4% are leading in our projections. See the list below for your riding.

Can a woman reasonably win in your riding?
(to get a YES, a one woman candidate must leading or be within 10% of the leading candidate, according to our 9 SEPT PROJECTIONS)
