Marketing the Afghan Mission

This is from CTV. Who pays for all this? No one asks. A great photo opportunity to sell the mission. General Hillier will soon be as valuable a marketing tool as Tim Horton's. Select celebrities can sell the war, "support the troops".Great photo-ops for politicians as well. The exercise is supposed to boost morale. You mean troop morale needs boosting? The game is not really hockey but salesmanship.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- The sticks are down and the elbows are up at Kandahar Airfield.

Hundreds of spectators are on hand for a morale-building ball-hockey tilt between NHL players and Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

Troops are also taking the opportunity to have their picture taken with the Stanley Cup, which made the trip with the NHLers.

The old-timers team includes former Toronto Maple Leaf Mike Gartner, two-time Cup winner Mark Napier and notorious enforcer Bob Probert.

Suiting up for the soldiers is Gen. Rick Hillier, Canada's chief of defence staff, and Brig.-Gen. Guy Laroche, the commander of Canadian forces in Afghanistan.

Tonight, troops will take in a concert featuring Canadian country-rockers Blue Rodeo, Montreal's Jonas Tomalty, Newfoundland's Lori Anna Reid and singer-songwriter Gregg Lawless.
