2,000 out of work as falling sales, big debts shutter 11 parts plants

The storm engulfing the auto industry touched down in the GTA again yesterday and swept away more than 2,000 jobs.
Vaughan-based Progressive Moulded Products Ltd. confirmed it had abruptly ceased production of plastic instrument panels and consoles at 11 small plants in Concord and Rexdale during the last two days.
Progressive, which started 41 years ago here, blamed a heavy debt load and declining business from major customers such as sputtering General Motors. The auto giant is reeling from a collapse in the North American truck market because of soaring gasoline prices.
Progressive, which only gained court protection from creditors two weeks ago, said the company could not reach agreement with lenders and customers to keep the company alive. The company had debt obligations of more than half a billion dollars.
Progressive, which already had 120 employees on layoff, also closed two plants in Missouri and Texas that wiped out about 300 other jobs.
The shutdown follows the closing on Monday of the Polywheels Manufacturing plant in Oakville that eliminated 250 jobs.
It produced plastic heat shields for GM trucks.
