Maher Arar to speak in Saskatoon

Maher Arar Coming to Saskatoon




Thursday, 12 April 2007The Canadian Bar Association is bringing Maher Arar to Saskatoon and lessons learned will be the focus of the Law Day luncheon.
Maher Arar will speak on "Civil Liberties and National Security: Lessons from the Arar Inquiry.

The Amercian government seized Arar, a Canadian citizen, and eventually deported him to Syria reportedly supplied with information from the RCMP on suspicion of ties to al Qaeda.

The Judge at the Commission of inquiry said the RCMP antiterrorism investigators violated the force's existing policy when they gave U.S. officials intelligence that had not been analyzed for accuracy. Canada issued a formal apology to Arar in January and awarded him $11.5 million in compensation.

Marar is in Saskatoon next Tuesday, April 17th, for a luncheon presentation.
